Luke 2:8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! ”
The second chapter of Luke has always been a favorite of mine and not just because of the famous scene from the Peanut’s Christmas movie. There is something so incredibly unique about the scene we see here.
There is nothing new about angelic messengers. We see them throughout scripture. We’ve seen them already in the story of Jesus’ birth, appearing multiple times to many of the central figures. But here their behavior is utterly unique.
The angels couldn’t help themselves. Their joy spills over into praise and celebration. They cheer the God who makes this wonderful thing happen. The rejoice in the fulfillment of the promises.
Some of the joys of Christmas and Advent are easy to experience no matter who you are. We look forward to the festivities, the lights, the presents, the time with family, the parties, the snacks and cocoa. It is a fun time of year.It is a joyful time of year.
On Christmas Day we celebrate in joy the beginning of the greatest miracle and greatest gift. But it only begins on Christmas Day. What starts in the manger finds its completion on the cross. The birth in Bethlehem culminates on Golgotha. With the birth of Jesus Christ our savior victory over sin was not yet complete, but it was inevitable.
And joy beyond joys, we – you and I – are invited to participate in the grace of God, through faith in that little baby who was and is Christ the Lord. So rejoice.
