One of the assignments in my Philosophy of Religion class is called a “Spiritual Life Map”. Students are to map out the events and experiences that have shaped their spiritual lives thus far.
I’m always a little surprised by how many include the moment they became a “fan”. Fans of movies stars, singers, musicians, actors, or Korean idols. To them, the moment is significant.
I was laughing to myself about this until I realized I am just as susceptible to that impulse.
If you’ve ever heard me talk about J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, or Iain M. Banks, my tone and manner convey something beyond mere fondness.
We have in us a tendency, a compulsion, a need to worship — for that is what this is. We find the praiseworthy, whatever it might be, however reasonable or irrational, and we praise it. And we find such praise very hard to let go of.
That is not by accident; that is by design. The Bible teaches that we were made to praise, and we were given all the abilities with which to do so. But there is a dark side to worship wrongly directed. My earlier laughter was not at the fact of such praise, but of thinking BTS is a deserving recipient. Jeremiah 2:13 reads:
“My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
You will worship, it is inevitable. Better to worship someone who is not only worthy, but will love you back tenfold.
