“You were running well. Who hindered you…?”

Paul’s question points to something many of us experience, even if by accident.

Life has a tendency to clutter. We gather small, meaningless things along the way that fill our homes. We pick up bits and pieces of purposeless information that fill our minds. The dross and silt of living build up gradually over time.

Like dust in a fan, like junk code in a program, like hair in a drain, like smoke in the lungs, like gunk in the gears.

Things get in, whether allowed in or through time and tiredness, and we cease to function at our best. We get dragged down, slowed up, and sidetracked.

Like a character in an open-world game, we spin our wheels in side-quests and lose track of the main quest.

Who or what hindered you?

You should be able to find it if you try, if you stop for a moment and really look at where you are. And if you can’t slow down for a status check, that already tells you much. Throw off that which hinders you. Not the responsibilities you bear, for those are yours to carry, but the chains that burden you, for they will strangle the life out of you.

“The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” (Luke 8:14-15)

At the start of a new semester and a new school year, we may need to do some weeding and pruning. If we are letting weeds grow up in our soil, we need to take the time, the effort, and devote some necessary attention to clearing them out. That way we can run and not be hindered, weary, nor faint.
